I've achieved a lot of physical goals--run distances I never thought I could, prepped and competed in bodybuilding shows, but I never was able to sustain my achievements or build on them before I recognized that my mental and emotional health was just as important to my physical goal, as my workouts and nutrition were.
We can "power through" a lot to get to a goal, when there is an end we can endure a lot in the pursuit of achieving something we REALLY want. We can motivate ourselves, surround ourselves with like-minded people, and do hard things...but not forever.
If you're having trouble achieving a physical goal, ask yourself if you've prioritized your mental and emotional health, too? If the answer is "no"-- and that is nothing to be ashamed of, it's an opportunity to reflect so you can create awareness around taking care of your emotional and mental wellbeing, too.

Your mental health is the bedrock of your physical well-being. When stress, overwhelm, and mental fatigue cling to you like a heavy shroud, no amount of sweat or dietary adjustments can unlock the results you crave. Here’s why giving precedence to your mental wellness is absolutely essential for achieving physical triumph.
**Stress Can Stagnate Your Journey**
Chronic stress elevates cortisol levels, a sneaky hormone that, when it lingers too long, becomes a formidable enemy—leading to muscle breakdown, insatiable cravings, and stubborn fat retention, especially around the waistline. In a body perpetually locked in fight-or-flight mode, survival instincts overshadow any desire for strength gains or fat loss. Embracing stress management through breathwork, mindfulness, and restorative days is as vital as adhering to your macros.
**Burnout Snuffs Out Consistency**
Mental fatigue breeds physical exhaustion. If you find yourself relentlessly pushing through without granting your body the rest it craves, workouts morph into monumental challenges, motivation wanes, and your risk of injury skyrockets. By cherishing recovery, prioritizing sleep, and indulging in self-care, you lay the groundwork for unwavering consistency without the threat of burnout.
**Your Mindset Molds Your Nutrition Choices**
Emotional eating, torturous dieting, and the punishing cycle of bingeing and restricting often stem from stress, guilt, and a skewed mindset rather than genuine hunger. Nurturing a healthy mental state empowers you to cultivate food choices that fondly align with your goals—without the oppressive weight of punishment.
**Sleep and Recovery Chart Your Path to Success**
A lack of restorative sleep—brought on by stress, anxiety, or relentless overexertion—can unravel your energy, elevate hunger hormones, and impede muscle recovery. By caring for your mind, you unlock better sleep, speedier recovery, and ultimately, peak performance.
**Confidence and Self-Compassion Fuel Your Journey**
True progress transcends mere discipline; it blossoms from self-compassion. If you continuously chastise yourself for an skipped workout or an imperfect meal, it’s all too easy to spiral into a punishing all-or-nothing mindset. The individuals who experience lasting success are those who approach their journeys with grace, patience, and an unwavering belief in themselves, even when the path isn’t perfectly smooth.
**The Heart (and mind) of the Matter**
If you find yourself feeling ensnared in your fitness journey, it may not be a lack of workouts or dietary failings—it could very well be a mental health struggle. Prioritizing your well-being doesn’t halt your progress; rather, it lays the foundation for sustainable success.
Pause for a moment and take stock: What’s one small, loving action you can take this week to nurture your mental health? Maybe it's setting a boundary, and keeping it. Or it may be allowing yourself the time to reflect in a journal entry. It may also be spending time in nature or with someone you love. Acheving your physical goals requires being mentally and emotionally healthy--take small steps, keep showing up for yourself, and you'll be feeling your best and getting to your goals before you know it!
